Modern Foreign Languages

You will have to choose one of the following Modern Foreign Languages next year: (French, Portuguese, Mandarin).
Remember the following:
  • As you progress through your education at school, a modern language will be of benefit to your personal and educational development in a variety of ways.
  • It will allow you to establish contact with people of your own age who speak other languages and to access information from other cultures.
  • It will help you to understand that experience of the world through another language can be just as 'real' and 'valid' as experience of the world through Spanish or English. It will offer you the positive experience of developing an entirely new mode of understanding and expression.
  • Keep in mind that you will have to show commitment at all times throughout the learning process.

Good luck in your choice!

Hi miss Ale:
I think that we have to chose the language that we prefere, not what our friends like and do it only because of that. If we do what we like maby it will be more easy. I think that I will do my best in eny of the languages I chose and hope that is easy for me so I can do better and know other language that is not spanish nor english, I can chose yet but today I will try to reflect on that.

Hi Miss Ale
If I would have stayed in this school for 7th I think I would choose french, because It is not so easy and I like very much the language and france is beautiful. But I also think that to choose, you need to think well, by your self and not because you want to be with friends because then if you don't know the language and you talk with your friends, I am sure It would not be not good at all. I have to chooose perfectly well, not to regret your choice.

Hi miss Ale,
It is a very good possibility to choose a language. I have been thinking this since 5th grade. I'am going to put as a first language Mandarin. It's is like Margaret said is not impossible but is difficult. I don't know nothing about Chinese culture and language. I already have made 3 years of French and I will not like to start again with the basic things. And Portuguese I never go to Brazil and nobody in my family speaks in Portuguese.
See you tomorrow

Well this is a nice activity and I think that as I know talking french and this one will be my forth one so I better chose the one that will take me to the best opportunities. Chinease. This one is very important for the future and for Business. I like school give us this choices such of languages or others. I think that if I chose that, one, I'll be happy with that. It is difficult but the effort counts. Remember: Chinease is the language of the Future.

Miss ALe
I will choose portuguese because i all the years go to Brasil, and when they tried to speak to me i cant understand. So I think it will be good if i can comunicate with them and i can understand them, also here in Argentina i have a lot of friends that dont know how to speak spanish and they only speak Portugues and a little bit of english, they live in Brasil. I didnt choose chinese because i think is very dificult to speak and i dont think i will go to china or do some friends that only spoke chinese, i didnt choose french because my sister nows a little bit and some days she can tell me some words or phrases.
See you tomorrow

Miss Ale,
Thank you for reminding us all the things we have to take into account while chosing the language. The first idea I had was chosing Mandarin because it is a great opportunity and as Margaret said as is a very difficult the language we have to start studing when we are young!
I was thinking while the talk and I said that we are very lucky to have this chance of studing and chosing a language! But I don't know yet if I will choose Mandarin I will think it a little bit more.
See you tomorrow

Hi Miss Ale,
I was very impressed by how the students of year 8 and 9 acted, talked and wrote in all the three languages. I will most probably choose French because of all my family members and since I have a french passport. For second choice I will choose Chinese because I am already doing Chinese in my house I think it would be a little bit boring starting from scratch. For me, learning another language is very important for several reasons. One of them being that you can communicate with other people around the world.
See you tomorrow!!

I think I´m going to choose portuguese because my father told me that the future languages are chinese and portuguese due to BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and I prefer portuguese

Hi Miss Ale,
It took me a lot of time to think which language to choose. I am going to choose for my first choice french because i have many friends who are french which i would love to talk to them in french. Before we talked in English but they did not talk it so well. Also because my sister studies french and she could help me in it. It would be nice and interesting to learn this language.
My second choice is portugues because it is not so difficult and it is related to spanish. Also i have a brasilian friend in U.S. It would be interesting to learn that language also.
My third choice is mandarin because i think it is too difficult and i think that it is not going o be useful to me in the future.
I wanted to learn italian very bad but since there is no italian i chose french. I took me a lot of time to think and i asked my family and they said it was a good choice. I will study french for three years then if i can choose italian i will choose that language, but if there is no italian i will keep on with french.I wan't to learn well french and then a fourth language and if i can i will learn a fifth one. I think this is a great subject and a very important one when you grow up. It can also be very fun!!!!Maybe i will go to study in France so it can be very useful.I liked the presentation the kids did because it also helped me to think what it was like.
See you tomorow!!!!

keeping all that in mind I thik that I will choose mandarin because although that is a difficult language and I know that, I think that I would prefer to choose that language.

Hi Miss Ale

I talked this with my parents and they told me it was a good chice because most of my family also nows very well french so I'm going to choose it. The presentations of the 8 and 9 children were very good.

I will choose Chinese because I think that it is a great advantage to work internationally knowing Chinese, I would like to know it, and you have to spend many time to learn it and as an adult it is very difficult and I like to (desafiar)myself

Hello Miss Ale:

I think I will choose Chinese just as my broter because I can get help from my brothe. I now that I will have to work allot but I think its worth it.I would like to try this language but if not I will try to change on the first term to Portuges because I have familiars in Brazil. It would let us more bussy and with more responsability.
But we grew bigger and we have more responsability. I am sure that I will enter to Chinese because nobody is going to choose it because its very diificult. We are not only going to study the language but also the culture.

Hi Miss Ale,
I don't know whether to choose French or Portugese. I find the decision very difficult.
Learning a third language is fantastic idea because it is a wonderful way to know other cultures and to know how to comunicate with your friends that speak other languages.
Firstly, I thought about choosing the easiest since at the beginning I didn't the idea of studying another language very much, but then i changed my mind.
Once I made up my mind, I was about to choose French because I like challenges but, on the other hand, I prefer Portugese because I think I will use it much more than French.
It is a very difficult decision because I'll have to stick to my choice for the next three years!
See you!

Hi all!

I was just dropping by to visit your blog and found your comments on languages very interesting. When my students were trying to choose a language, they checked out a few sites to help them decide - it's posted here: http://www.worldstaracademy.com/2010/06/beginning-language-studies.html

Maybe that will help someone. Have fun choosing!

Hi miss Ale:
I think that its a grate idea to include one more language to our learning. I was determinate to chose Portuguese, but when we went to audiovisual to talk about it, I was very confused about what I was going to chose. But now I know that I am going to chose french. I thought that it was going to be fun to chose chines but my brother did and he didn't like it at all. I know that we don't need to chose the language because of the trip, but I love France and I had never went, so I think that with my family we will go to there in a few years and I love the language french, I think that its like, like the romance language, its very nice. Another reason of why I chose french, its because Mandarin its very difficult and I think that I'm not going to like it, and Portuguese I all ready know somethings about how to talk in Portuguese.

Hello Miss Ale
The new language that I am going to choose is French, I hope it is easy because is starting with a new language that I have no idea of a word only some exprecions that are very common, is like a baby which doesn't knows anything about the language and starts little buy little but at school it is not like that you have test and you don't have all the time of the world. Hope I learn the language easy.
See you Clara V 6A

Miss Ale
I think that I will choose french or Portuguese. I choose French because is not very difficult but is not very easy and my mother cant to do French. I choose also Portuguese like french because my brother Juan it do Portuguese in secondary and my father knows Portuguese. I don´t choose Mandarin in to reasons one because I brother said that some friends that do Mandarin said that is impossible and the other reason is because it is not very necessarily for the future for me the thing that is very important for the future of Mandarin, French and Portuguese is French for me because many countris like Francia, and then Portuguese because it is Portugal that is very nice and my brother said me that the best of Portuguese goes to Portugal. The best of Mandarin maybe goes to china.

Hi Miss Ale!
Since I started primary I was sure I would choose french, but when they gave us the survey I started doubting between French and Portuguese... After the talk I was again, convinced I would choose French although portuguese WILL be as a second choice! I think I will leave out mandarine.. I didn`t complete the survey yeet, but I hope I can be in my first two options!
But first I will think it VERY well as it is a VERY important decision.
See you and thank you for the info!

I think it is the language of the future. There are a lot of people from China so I think it is at least for me a great oportunitty. So I am very excited.

Hi Miss Ale,
I have talked with my parents a little about the languages and I have sent the form in. I think that I am going to choose french. I know that Portuguese is supposed to easy but I have always wanted to learn French so I think that now is my chance. It would be neat to learn Mandarin but I think that it would be hard. I am also choosing French because my sister in 8th grade is taking French and I think that she likes it. I am looking forward to secondary. I think it will be a big change and it might be harder but I am excited. I will also miss primary and all of the advantages that we have like the net-books or the good teachers but I am sure that there are good advantages in secondary too. I will miss you next year!
See you on Monday!

Hi Miss Ale,
Thankyou for remembering us about all those TIPS ( not things) you gave us! I was thinking about choosing French, but I'm not so sure! I also think that it will help us communicate with other people that speak those languages! I also think that it will be a great change but something FOR could be that we have the freedom of choosing the language that we want and the sport that we want also we can choose an instrument!

Hi Miss Ale
I think that learning a 3rd language is a very usefull tool, because as they said in the presentation it will give you in result some advantajes. Like: for our business when we grow up, and as you said in the post it will help you to know more peolpe. I think this Modern Foreign Language project is very usefull for all our studies in school, university and for our future.
