Word Formation

This week we started working on prefixes and suffixes.
Remember:

A prefix is a group of letters which you can add to the beginning of a root word to change the meaning of the word.
e.g. mis + fortune = misfortune

A suffix is a word ending. It is a group of letters you can add to the end of a root word. e.g. walking, helpful

A root word stands on its own as a word but you can make new words from it by adding beginnings (prefixes) and endings (suffixes).

Here are some games for you to practise. Good luck and enjoy them!

Reading Circle Time

This week we started our weekly reading circle time with great success. It really showed that you are enjoying reading the fantasy short stories even though some of you might have found them a bit difficult.

Reading circle time is a time for us to gather together to share the main ideas in the stories without revealing the end, giving our opinion and recommending the different stories so as to encourage other peers to read them.

Keep on reading with the same energy and don't get discouraged!

Poem of the week

Read the poem carefully. Can you guess who the author is? What is the author refering to?

I'm Glad she was There

The leaves rustle gently
as I tread softly
nobody can hear me
but the wind is listening intently

The place where I am
is not a place of darkness
but a place of rest
with no cruelty or harshness

Alas, you must have guessed,

I lie in a graveyard
I am dead, you must think,
but that idea I must discard.

Yes, I was a ghost,
a mere shadow of life
but now I rest in the graveyard
since I was pitied, and relieved of strife.

But now here I am,
in the garden of death
and I am glad she was there,
when I took my last breath.

What do you think of Francis Bacon's quote on books?
"Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention.~ Francis Bacon ~

My Goals

If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.

A month ago you were asked to think and write down two goals for the month of April.

What do you think? Have you been able to achieve them? If so, how do you feel about it?

If you haven't achieved them, what are your goals for the month of May?

Poem of the week!

Read the poem, think and then post the comment.
What is the poet talking about or referring to?

A cold and starry darkness moans
And settles wide and still
Over a jumble of tumbled stones
Dark on a darker hill.

An owl among those shadowy walls,
Gray against gray
Of ruins and brittle weeds, calls
And soundless swoops away.

Rustling over scattered stones
Dancers hover and sway,
Drifting among their own bones
Like the webs of the Milky Way.

By Harry Behn
